{"id":585,"date":"2009-03-24T12:40:26","date_gmt":"2009-03-24T17:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wjfuoco.com\/?p=585"},"modified":"2009-03-24T12:40:26","modified_gmt":"2009-03-24T17:40:26","slug":"ubuntu-fun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.wjfuoco.com\/index.php\/2009\/03\/ubuntu-fun\/","title":{"rendered":"Ubuntu Fun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-589\" title=\"tux\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wjfuoco.com\/images\/tux.jpg\" alt=\"tux\" width=\"218\" height=\"337\" align=\"right\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.wjfuoco.com\/images\/tux.jpg 218w, http:\/\/www.wjfuoco.com\/images\/tux-194x300.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/>To paraphrase a roommate in a conversation about Ubuntu (Linux): &#8220;That&#8217;s why Ubuntu isn&#8217;t mainstream, takes a while to set up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>You see, that was exactly my experience installing Ubuntu over the past 2 weeks on my machine.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I had to figure out how to boot and install on my SATA hard drives (fyi &#8211; your grub boot line should have &#8220;pci=nomsi&#8221; in place of &#8220;quiet splash&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li>Video drivers are, or at least for me, a nightmare to install. \u00a0As you&#8217;re probably aware, linux drivers aren&#8217;t overly abundant, and nothing annoys me more than a grainy screen when you invested in something that should look real good! \u00a0But, after much consultation w\/ the owner of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zeronothing.com\" target=\"_blank\">zeronothing.com<\/a>, I learned that because of my onboard Nvidia GeForce card, I had to uninstall ALL previously attempted &amp; installed Nvidia drivers which came w\/ Ubuntu. \u00a0Luckily, Nvidia had \u00a0a GeForce linux driver and WOW&#8230;.awesome look! \u00a0But to get the settings to stick, I had to save the new xorg.conf file as Root\/Sudo and I couldn&#8217;t figure out how (I didn&#8217;t want to change the permissions on the directory, etc. \u00a0Once again,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zeronothing.com\" target=\"_blank\">zeronothing.com<\/a>\u00a0to the rescue! \u00a0This makes me embarassed but simply running the Nvidia X Server Settings manager from Terminal, using &#8220;sudo nvidia-settings&#8221; easily fixed this error and allows my system to use this new driver on reboot!<\/li>\n<li>Compiz didn&#8217;t start automatically, duhhh I had to set my Visual Appearance settings to something other than &#8220;None&#8221; and then Compiz started on boot&#8230;.yes!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So three major issues, took forever, plus all the other stuff, such as trying to find which new apps you want to use in place of your old Windoze (Yes I spelled it like you think!) XP apps.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Banshee for music<\/li>\n<li>Thunderbird w\/ Lightning for e-mails &amp; calendar<\/li>\n<li>Pidgin for AIM<\/li>\n<li>Twhirl still&#8230;&#8230;Adobe Air rocks!<\/li>\n<li>Opera for the web but ughhh don&#8217;t like the font rendering so much, Firefox has some bad moments too.<\/li>\n<li>Bluefish Editor for all my programming: php, xml, html, etc. etc. etc.<\/li>\n<li>Ubuntu-Tweak for some awesome desktop tweaks and\u00a0convenience\u00a0for a few things.<\/li>\n<li>VLC for videos again &#8211; plays ANYTHING!<\/li>\n<li>VMWare Server to virtualize XP, next up, OSX thanks to some instructions &amp; help from the author of <a href=\"http:\/\/mzdspd.com\/mzdspd\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">mzdspd.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Terminal for everything else!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With that all said, I&#8217;m pretty happy with Ubuntu, despite the length of time it took to get the system set up. \u00a0I have some awesome keyboard gestures &amp; mouse gestures going on. \u00a0It is so much easier than XP or Vista, apps &amp; customization like OSX, but 100% less cost (FREE!).<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, if you have any awesome apps that I need to know about, let me know! \u00a0Here&#8217;s a few you should try out:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/htop.sourceforge.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>htop<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; an interactive process-viewer for Linux<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/do.davebsd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gnome-Do &#8211; quickly launch applications<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ubuntu-tweak.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ubuntu-Tweak &#8211; great tweaks for Ubuntu<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Well, I&#8217;ll \u00a0catch you <em>later on<\/em>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To paraphrase a roommate in a conversation about Ubuntu (Linux): &#8220;That&#8217;s why Ubuntu isn&#8217;t mainstream, takes a while to set up.&#8221; You see, that was exactly my experience installing Ubuntu over the past 2 weeks on my machine.
